What Will Cornell Do?

April 23, 2024

As widely reported in the press in recent months, Cornell and the Ivy League are awash in discrimination in hiring, admissions, and curricula as misguided Social Justice and DEI policies have supplanted scholastic merit, academic freedom, and viewpoint diversity on campus. The ideological dogma now dominating the Ivies has spawned an alarming wave of antisemitism and inter-group hate which has never before been seen at America’s top universities. As a consequence, this week’s news reports include the following:

Despite a landslide of evidence to the contrary, Cornell’s President has admitted no connection between her DEI policies and the acute problems and reputational decline now afflicting the university. President Pollack has gone on the record stating that DEI dogma has equal priority with free inquiry and academic excellence as the university’s primary mission. This position is wrong and must be reversed.

Pollack’s DEI program at Cornell has eliminated the Dean’s List, dropped SAT tests in admissions, and favored political activism instead of exemplary scholarship in faculty hiring and admissions. Thousands of concerned alumni continue to be dismayed as the Cornell Administration fails to respond to detailed policy recommendations endorsed by leading US educational organizations which would help Cornell correct course. This lack of response by the Pollack Administration has caused major Cornell donors to call for the replacement of the university President and Provost.

Setting an example for Cornell, Harvard is now taking the necessary steps to start rebuilding academic merit on campus by reversing the university’s DEI social engineering experiment which is the root cause of the problems at Cornell and the other Ivies:

All the above actions taken at Harvard have also been recommended to Cornell leadership by university trustees, alumni, and donors. Harvard has concluded that a university President who has championed dysfunctional and discriminatory DEI social engineering policies must be replaced in order for necessary reforms to take place.  The Cornell Board of Trustees continues to resist the above actions at Cornell. As a result, while Harvard makes reforms, Cornell remains mired in campus unrest, DEI driven hiring discrimination, and academic decline. Thousands of Cornell donors, alumni, parents, and students are pressing Cornell leadership to institute the reforms which Harvard is now advancing. The Cornell Board of Trustees must now take the steps necessary to preserve the standing and reputation of Cornell University.
